A lot of people ask us what happens to a disc during injury. So there's two things that typically happen with a disc during injury. One is a little less severe, which is a bulge, and the second, which is more intense, is called herniation. When we look at a disc, the inside is this squishy part, which gives us flexibility. It's a nucleus pulpulsa, and then around it are concentric fibrous material that's costage which is the annulus fibrosa which gives us our stability in the spine and it's in the front here we see all these blue discs here that's the disc so when you have an injury where there's pressure into the spine the first type is a bulge now it's a great it's like a balloon you put pressure the balloon and things shift around and that's where you can see here it's not perfectly encapsulated, it's a little squished out. And that's a bulge and it can affect the nerves that come off the spine and cause irritation and pain. And then in more severe cases, you can have a herniation where the anglos fibrosis can tear rip and then the jelly part can squeeze out and that a severe disc injury and on the model as you see in where this part is the disc it red because it inflamed it's irritated and it can hit the nerve itself and cause that sigh especially if it's a low back you can have sciatic pain when the pain is going down to the foot and the neck you can see where it goes down the arm pain down the arm and numbness and tingling in the arm or leg as well when you have those severe disc injuries a lot of times that happens with heavy lifting hitting your head your car accidents all of those things can cause disc injury but it's something that chiropractic care is great with helping so those are the two types of major your disc injuries that we see quite a bit here at Allen Center Health.
