Upper Cervical Chiropractic Can Fix Low Back Pain | Chiropractor for Back Pain in Winter Garden, FL
Discover how an upper cervical misalignment can create a chain reaction that causes low back pain — and how correcting it relieves pressure throughout the spine.
Key Takeaways
- A misalignment in the upper cervical spine can trigger a whole-body compensation pattern that leads to low back pain.
- The righting reflex causes your body to tilt the shoulder and hip to keep your eyes level, creating a functional short leg and lumbar tilt.
- Specialized upper cervical X-rays are used to precisely identify the misalignment before any adjustment is made.
- Correcting the upper cervical misalignment allows the entire spine and pelvis to re-balance, taking pressure off the low back.
- Treating the root cause — not just the site of pain — is key to lasting low back pain relief.
Overview
How Upper Cervical Care Relieves Low Back Pain
It might seem surprising that a misalignment at the very top of your spine could be the root cause of your low back pain — but the connection is more direct than most people realize. In this video, our doctor explains the mechanical chain reaction that links the upper cervical spine to the lumbar spine.
When the upper cervical vertebrae shift out of alignment, the head begins to tilt. Because of a neurological mechanism called the righting reflex, your body instinctively works to keep your eyes level with the horizon. To compensate, the body makes a series of adjustments down the chain:
- The shoulder rises on one side
- The hip rises to match
- One leg becomes functionally shorter than the other
- The lumbar spine tilts, creating uneven pressure and pain in the low back
Precision Correction at the Source
Rather than treating the low back in isolation, Atlas Injury to Health uses specialized upper cervical X-rays to identify the exact nature and degree of the misalignment at the top of the spine. By correcting that primary misalignment, the entire body is able to re-balance — evening out the shoulders, leveling the hips, and relieving the mechanical stress that was driving low back discomfort. It's a precision, whole-body approach to a problem most people are told to manage from the bottom up.

So a lot of people ask us, how does upper cervical work help with low back pain? Well, what happens is, is after we do our special x-rays for the upper cervical misalignment, we see that there's angulations that happen. So when a person goes out of alignment up here, mechanically, their head's going to tilt over. If their head's tilted over, we have this thing called a writing reflex, which means our eyes have to be horizontal at the horizon. And as that happens, and I go horizontal, my head's still tilted over, but the body adjusts and adapts where the shoulder will rise, the hip will rise, causing a short leg on one side, which is going to tilt the lumbar spine over, which is going to cause discomfort and pain. So by getting this straight, the whole body evens out, which takes the pressure off the low back and helps alleviate the low back pain. met
