Does Florida PIP Cover Chiropractic Care After a Car Accident?

In most cases, yes. Florida's Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage can pay for chiropractic care after a car accident, but only if you get initial care within 14 days of the crash. PIP pays 80% of reasonable medical expenses, up to $10,000 when a qualifying provider determines you had an emergency medical condition. Otherwise the limit is $2,500. At Atlas Injury to Health in Winter Garden and Ocala, care after an auto accident is handled through Florida PIP.

The 14-day rule, in plain English

To use PIP medical benefits, you need initial care within 14 days after the accident. That care can come from a medical doctor, osteopathic physician, dentist, chiropractic physician, advanced practice registered nurse, a hospital, or emergency services. If you wait longer, PIP may not pay for treatment of that accident at all. If you've been in a crash, book a visit soon, even if you feel “mostly fine.”

$2,500 or $10,000: the emergency medical condition question

  • Up to $10,000 if a medical doctor, osteopathic physician, dentist, physician assistant or advanced practice registered nurse determines that you had an emergency medical condition.
  • Up to $2,500 if a provider determines you did not have an emergency medical condition.

Chiropractors aren't on the list of providers who can make the emergency medical condition finding. Your chiropractic care can still be covered, but the higher limit depends on that finding by one of the providers listed above.

What PIP pays, and what it doesn't

  • PIP pays 80% of reasonable expenses for medically necessary care, up to your limit. Your policy and other coverage decide who pays the rest.
  • Florida PIP medical benefits don't cover massage therapy or acupuncture, whoever provides them.
  • Your own policy may have a deductible or other terms. Check with your insurer.

What to bring to your first visit

  • Photo ID
  • Your auto insurance information (and claim number, if you have one)
  • A list of current medications or supplements
  • Any prior imaging (X-rays, MRI)

What if it's been more than 14 days?

PIP medical benefits generally depend on initial care within 14 days. If you've missed that window, call your insurer to ask about your options. You can also call us to talk about care and payment.

Do I need a lawyer?

Many people handle a PIP claim directly with their insurer. Others choose to talk to an attorney, especially when injuries are serious or fault is disputed. That's your decision, and this page isn't legal advice.
